Behind the story: “First Dates”

“First Dates” is the first of three short stories in my just-released collection A Little Bit of Love. I wrote the first draft of this story in a writing class in Lincoln City, Oregon.

I’m not anti-romance, but I don’t write romances – or at least I didn’t think I did. The class assignment was to write a story for a pretend anthology called First Dates. I took that literally…and voilĂ ! My very first romance!

This story is a “meet cute,” which Wikipedia defines as “a situation in film, television, etc. in which a future romantic couple meets for the first time in a way that is considered adorable, entertaining, or amusing.” I had never heard of the term, but apparently a lot of the movies I’ve watched over the years fall into this category.

One of the events in this short story actually happened to me many years ago when I was single. The rental house I was living in had many quirks, many of which will undoubtedly pop up in other stories. One of them was that the washing machine wasn’t balanced, and no matter what I did it insisted on moving across the kitchen when it hit the spin cycle. Meaning moving like a foot or two. I was unable to figure out how to fix it (this is one of the reasons I’m married…now I can just point and say “it’s broken!!!”), so I would sit on top of the machine to keep it in one place. One day a guy I’d gone on one date with called me at home while I was doing laundry, and when the washing machine started to wander across the room I jumped on it like I normally did. This guy actually asked me the question that Barry asks Julie in “First Dates.” Needless to say, we did not have a second date…

Here’s this post’s token dog photo: Jasper on Mt. Sanitas last week!

Lots of little bits

The short story collection is available on the Kindle!

A Little Bit of Love final front cover

The paperback will be up on Amazon soon, and will follow on Barnes & Noble. Last time there was about a two week lag before it appeared on Barnes & Noble. The ebook will soon be available on Kobo, Apple, and the Nook.

Yay!!!

It was a lot of fun to work on this project – and not just the writing part. I designed the cover and had a ball. But it is awfully nice to be able to call this done! and get back to the novel.

I’m editing the first two chapters of the novel, and will submit them to my writing group by the end of the week. There still is no title, but I’ll come up with one eventually. I hope…

In other news, Jasper is making great progress in agility class, and has learned two tricks! Here’s Jasper and Maisie trying out our new weave poles. They aren’t very good at taking turns, especially Jasper. The photo is a bit crooked, but as you can see things were rather chaotic.

New weave poles!

Patience is a virtue…

…but not one I have, at least not when it comes to waiting for things to be published!

The short story collection is ready to go…but I forgot to add a table of contents, so everything is now delayed by a whole day!

I did get to see a mostly correct version when my proof arrived the other day.

A Little Bit of Love proof front

This collection is pretty short – only 59 pages (that includes the table of contents…I’m not making that mistake again! hopefully), so there’s no text on the spine. (You have to have a minimum of 101 pages for the spine to be wide enough for text to fit.) I wasn’t sure how this would turn out, but it looks fine in person.

I’m glad I ordered the proof because I hadn’t realized what the cream paper would look like with so much white on the cover. I’ve switched to white paper.

Putting all of this together was more work than I’d expected, mostly because I neglected to write down everything I did the last go-round. Oops.

Here’s a photo of some of the other things that have been keeping me busy.
